Spruce Pine is an idyllic mountain town located 780m above sea level in the Appalachian Mountains. It is here that The Quartz Corp’s North American headquarters and mining activities are located, all thanks to a unique geological event that took place 380 million years ago. It was this event that allowed some of the largest feldspar and mica crystals in the world to form.
The African and North American continents collided at that point, resulting in friction which melted rock 9-15 miles below the earth’s surface. The pressure at this depth caused the molten rock to be forced into cracks and fissures in the surrounding host rock, creating deposits called pegmatites. These deposits cooled and crystallised slowly over the next 100 million years, and the depth and lack of moisture prevented impurities from penetrating the grain structure.
The Quartz Corp currently employs ~250 full time workers together with contractors and auxiliary staff. Because our company believes strongly in investing in our community, we offer internships, comprehensive training, and world-class benefits.
